It talks about how contests create engagement, awareness of the brand, makes the brand feel genuine, and creates credibility for the company. The article also suggests having daily contests along with how to make them simple to execute. The article also covers how some restaurants on Instagram have contests around sharing photos of food so word or pictures can reach beyond just followers of a restaurant. The reasoning is it takes little effort for patrons to post pictures of their food. This is because it is already a common occurrence already for many people to take photos of the dishes they get at a restaurant. However, there are restrictions they have to operate within. It can be small things such as not encouraging people to tag themselves in photos of food as they are not in the photo or posting near duplicates of a photo. While this article frames the idea in the context of benefitting restaurants, it can also work for any company. Any company can tailor a contest to its needs and draw people in that way. Nothing invites participation like a contest, because of the fact there is always some kind of reward being offered to win. People like free stuff even if it's something small. This is why contests are so successful in getting people to engage. The more people are interacting with your social media the more chance your social media marketing will be successful. As discussed in the lecture social media only works if people are interacting online. By having people create their own posts by something a simple as a contest that only one person will win then it is generating a lot of free publicity. Anyone who shares a post such as their food from a restaurant people they know will see it and it will raise awareness of the restaurant in their minds. This shows how contests tap into the social publishing and social community zones of social media marketing. People create and share their own content leading to their friends and family see that. This opens the door for the poster to review the restaurant to family and friends. If the reviews are good that persons social circle will be more likely to go to that restaurant in the future. In short, mission accomplished you have more consumers, appear more genuine (because they are featuring stories/content of their customers to seem like their values are aligned with their patrons) and have credibility.
